The Detroit Tigers split a double-header with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon, winning the first game and losing the second.

In the game one victory, Tarik Skubal delivered a dominant performance on the mound. The lefty pitched 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on just three hits, walking one, and striking out eight in the 8-0 win. Skubal is emerging as a strong contender for an All-Star Game selection, boasting a 7-1 record with a 2.01 ERA.

According to Stathead, Skubal’s impressive start has placed him in the organization’s record books:

“Tarik Skubal’s 2.01 ERA through 11 starts is the lowest by a Tigers starting pitcher to begin a season since Doyle Alexander in 1987.”

Now fully healthy, Skubal has elevated his performance, becoming one of the top left-handed pitchers in baseball. Even renowned pitchers like Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer haven’t achieved these numbers for the Tigers in the past 30 years, highlighting Skubal’s exceptional talent.

The Tigers have invested draft picks in pitchers such as Skubal, Matt Manning, and Casey Mize. Although injuries have hindered their progress, Skubal’s current success represents what the organization had envisioned.

Debuting in 2020, Skubal has a career record of 30-28 with a 3.59 ERA.

The Tigers will face the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night at 7:10 p.m. ET, with Jack Flaherty (DET) pitching against Nick Pivetta (BOS).
