Michael Ajayi expressed immense confidence in the potential of the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the 2024-25 season.
In an interview with college basketball analyst Andy Katz during the NBA Draft Combine, Ajayi stated, “If [NBA coaches and general managers] want me to stay in the draft then, God bless. But if they want me to do another year [of college basketball], then I’d be glad to go to Gonzaga with a good team next year. I feel like we’re gonna win a national championship.”
The 6-foot-7 Kent, Washington native’s decision to withdraw his name from NBA Draft consideration on the final day for college players to do so, positions the Zags favorably in the preseason top 10 heading into the upcoming season.
Ajayi showcased his skills impressively in pre-draft scrimmages at the NBA Draft Combine held in Chicago earlier this month. He recorded nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists in 18 minutes off the bench in his first scrimmage and followed up with a 14-point performance in his second scrimmage.
After receiving feedback from scouts and general managers, Ajayi chose to utilize his final year of eligibility with the Bulldogs. The team boasts a strong lineup, including seven of the top eight scorers from last season’s Sweet 16 team, along with notable additions from transfers.
Ajayi’s path to Gonzaga is noteworthy; initially overlooked by Division-I programs, he excelled at Pierce Community College before his standout season at Pepperdine. His impressive performance there garnered widespread interest, leading to his decision to commit to Gonzaga.
ESPN’s Jonathan Givony reported that Ajayi made a positive impression at the combine, and his progress will be closely watched during his senior season.
