Caitlin Clark faces yet another setback from USA Basketball as the Olympics approach.
Caitlin Clark’s exclusion from the national team for this year’s Summer Olympic Games in Paris has drawn significant attention. Clark was not only left out of the 12-player roster for the Games next month but also missed the cut for the 3-on-3 women’s team, a roster spot that fellow rookie Cameron Brink secured.
However, Brink’s recent knee injury necessitated a replacement for the smaller 3-on-3 roster. Although many suggested Clark as an ideal substitute, the reality diverged significantly from this expectation.
Clark did not meet the eligibility requirements necessary for selection to the 3×3 team. Instead, one of Brink’s teammates from the Los Angeles Sparks was chosen.
On Monday, USA Basketball announced that Dearica Hamby would replace Brink on the 3×3 team. Hamby met FIBA’s eligibility criteria and is having an outstanding season with the Los Angeles Sparks, who are currently rebuilding.
Hamby is one of four WNBA players this season averaging a double-double per game. Even if Clark had been eligible for the 3×3 team, Hamby would still be a more fitting replacement for Brink, providing the US with a stronger chance to secure another gold medal.
Meanwhile, Clark will continue to train and aim for a spot on the team for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
