Shohei Ohtani is on the brink of making history with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Since joining MLB in 2018, Ohtani has consistently broken records, and he’s now set to add another to his impressive list.
Ohtani’s RBI Streak Revives Dodgers’ Glory Days
In just half a season with the Dodgers, Ohtani has tied a single-season franchise record by recording at least one RBI in nine consecutive games. This record, previously set by Roy Campanella (1955), Augie Galan (1944), Eddie Brown (1924), and Bob Fisher (1913), has only been matched once since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles, by Matt Kemp over two seasons (2011-2012).
Ohtani’s streak makes him the first Dodger to achieve nine consecutive games with an RBI in a single season in 69 years. His performance at the plate this season has been outstanding. He ranks fifth in RBIs (60) across Major League Baseball and third in the National League. Additionally, he leads MLB in batting average (.320) and is among the top three in runs (63), hits (99), home runs (24), slugging percentage (.634), and OPS (1.032).
On Tuesday, Ohtani tied the record with a 376-foot leadoff homer in the Dodgers’ 4-3 win over the White Sox. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a walk, adding another RBI later in the game.
Given Ohtani’s consistent performance, it seems likely that he will soon set a new franchise record for consecutive games with an RBI.
