D’Angelo Russell Shares His Reasons for Opting into His Player Option with the Lakers
angelo Russell has chosen to exercise his player option to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2024-25 season, securing $18.7 million. This decision, made a day before the opt-in deadline, ensures his place on the Lakers’ roster for another year. Russell expressed his enthusiasm for the new coaching staff in a statement to ESPN:
“I love what JJ is about, and I really see myself thriving under his guidance to help win at a high level.”
Russell, 28, had a strong season with the Lakers, especially in the latter half, averaging 18.0 points on 45.6% shooting, 41.5% from three-point range, along with 6.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. Despite being a central figure in trade discussions last season, he is committed to staying with the team under new head coach JJ Redick.
This move provides the Lakers with both stability and flexibility. While Russell’s opt-in secures his presence for another season, it also positions him as a prime candidate for trade discussions. His $18.7 million contract and expiring status make him an attractive asset as the Lakers look to optimize their roster.
