49ers Sign Frank Darby Amid Aiyuk and Pearsall Absences

SANTA CLARA — On Saturday, the 49ers bolstered their 90-man roster by signing former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Frank Darby.

With Brandon Aiyuk absent from practices and rookie Ricky Pearsall on the non-football injury list, the team sought additional depth at the position.

Interestingly, Darby has a connection with both Aiyuk and Pearsall, having played alongside them at Arizona State for two seasons each.

Darby, a sixth-round pick by the Falcons in the 2021 NFL Draft, appeared in 16 games over three seasons with Atlanta, recording two receptions for 29 yards.

To accommodate Darby’s addition, the 49ers waived cornerback Kemon Hall.

Aiyuk, who reported to training camp on time, is currently not practicing due to contract negotiations. Pearsall is anticipated to return to practice early next week following a hamstring injury sustained during pre-camp workouts.

Jacob Cowing and Tay Martin also missed Friday’s practice session.

Darby is the second wide receiver the 49ers have signed in the past three days, following the addition of Malik Turner after left tackle Trent Williams was placed on the reserve/did not report list due to his contract holdout.

The 49ers now have 10 wide receivers on their summer roster.
