PHILADELPHIA – With the constant rotation on defense during the first week of Eagles camp, it’s challenging to identify consistent standouts.

Eagles on SI asked head coach Nick Sirianni before Monday’s practice who has caught his eye. His answer was unexpected.

“We’re looking for players to exhibit great detail and toughness,” he said. “I’ve seen this toughness shine through, particularly with some defensive ends demonstrating physical toughness and relentless effort.”

He named three players.

One was Nolan Smith. This is a positive sign as Smith is expected to compensate for the loss of Haason Reddick, who was traded to the Jets. During Monday’s practice, Smith appeared to record back-to-back sacks in 11-on-11 drills.

“I’m very comfortable with the scheme now,” Smith said post-practice. “I’ve learned body position, control, and leverages. Initially, lining up against AJ Brown was daunting. Now, I feel more at ease because I understand my support and don’t feel isolated. Facing Brown and DeVonta Smith used to feel overwhelming, but not anymore.”

Another mentioned was Patrick Johnson. A seventh-round pick from 2021 out of Tulane, Johnson had a limited role in his first three seasons. In 2022, he played 19% of the defensive snaps under then-DC Jonathan Gannon, recording three QB hits, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Last year, with Sean Desai and then Matt Patricia as DCs, he barely played, seeing only 38 defensive snaps. This season could be pivotal for him, adding much-needed depth at the position.

The final name was rookie Jalyx Hunt. While he was considered a developmental player after being a surprise third-round pick (94th overall) from Houston Christian, he has been very active in the first four practices, including what would have been a sack on Monday. Hunt, who started his college career at Cornell and transitioned from safety to a 6-3, 252-pound linebacker, has shown both rushing and coverage skills.

“It’s been exciting,” Sirianni said. “We’re evaluating everyone as they learn to play together. But these guys have stood out for their relentless effort and toughness throughout camp.”

Hunt’s development may be accelerated with live reps once the season starts in September.

“Oh, shoot, he’s good,” said defensive end Josh Sweat. “His effort is through the roof, and he’s learning quickly. I like him a lot; he’s a good guy. We welcomed him with open arms.”
