BOSTON, Mass. — After showcasing his skills in the NBA Summer League, former Gonzaga standout Anton Watson signed a two-way contract with the Boston Celtics on Friday.
This arrangement means that Watson, known as the Spokane Kid, is expected to split his time between playing for the 2024 NBA champions and their G-League affiliate, the Maine Celtics, based in Portland, Maine.
Under the terms of a two-way contract, Watson can only participate in 50 games with the Boston Celtics during his rookie season, with the remainder of his time spent in the G-League.
Watson had a strong five-year career with the Gonzaga Bulldogs, averaging 14.5 points and making 41% of his three-point shots in his final season. The 6-foot-8 forward played in 151 games, amassing 1,447 points, 780 rebounds, 299 assists, 215 steals (second all-time at Gonzaga behind John Stockton), and 87 blocks.
Selected 54th overall by the Celtics, Watson played in all five Summer League games, making a significant impression. In Las Vegas, he averaged 11.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, shooting 51.1% from the field, 35% from three, and 85.7% from the free-throw line in 24.4 minutes per game.
The Celtics are focusing on developing their G-League team, having seen success with players like Sam Hauser, Neemias Queta, and Luke Kornet, who have all secured full-scale contracts. Watson now has the opportunity to further develop his game and compete for a spot in the Celtics’ main rotation.
