The contract dispute between the New York Jets and linebacker Haason Reddick shows no signs of resolution, with both parties reportedly at an impasse for some time.
A ccording to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, when the Jets acqNew York Jets uired Reddick in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, they offered him a “below market” contract, which he declined. The team did not extend a new offer because they were informed by Reddick’s representative that he would play under his existing contract.
The Jets have maintained that they believed Reddick would play the 2024 season under the final year of his contract, which has a base salary of $14.25 million. This belief is cited as the reason New York has not proposed another long-term contract to Reddick since acquiring him from Philadelphia. However, Russini reported that this communication issue is what led Reddick to request a trade on Monday.
Russini also mentioned that Reddick’s camp believed the Jets had agreed to negotiate a new deal. Reddick’s representatives trusted that this would be resolved by the start of training camp. The Jets did reach out to Reddick a few weeks ago, indicating a willingness to rework his current deal if he attended training camp, but Reddick chose to continue his holdout.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that sources said before training camp that Reddick was “serious about his money and his respect” and felt he was not receiving either from the Jets. Garafolo added that the deadlock between the two parties “could last into the regular season.”
Jets general manager Joe Douglas released a statement on Monday stating that the team has no intention of trading Reddick. The two-time Pro Bowler was expected to be a key part of New York’s defense, so resolving the contract dispute is in the franchise’s best interest.
