Angel City FC Signs Ex-Manchester United Captain Katie Zelem

After a strong performance in the NWSL Summer Cup, Angel City FC continues to advance its development by securing midfielder Katie Zelem on a free-agent deal through the 2026 season.

“I’m excited to join Angel City and embrace this new challenge,” Zelem said. “Competing in the NWSL, one of the most competitive leagues globally, represents a significant step in my career. I’m looking forward to testing myself in a new league, against top players, and contributing to the success of this ambitious club.”

As the former Manchester United Women’s captain, Zelem is the first player to be signed by Angel City FC following the August transfer window in the NWSL.

Zelem Seeks a New Challenge

Zelem spent the last seven seasons with Manchester United Women in the Women’s Super League (WSL), where she scored 32 goals, provided 46 assists, and made 161 appearances. She also had a stint with Juventus during the 2017-2018 season, helping the club win the Serie A title.

“For me, having leaders on the pitch is crucial, and that’s something I’ll bring from my time at Manchester United,” Zelem told Forbes. “Being the youngest captain when I first received the armband allowed me to grow significantly in that role, and I’ve learned a lot about leadership and connecting with people. There’s much to carry forward from both on and off the pitch.”

Zelem made her senior debut for the England Women’s National Team in 2021 and participated in both the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup with the Lionesses.

Katie Zelem Embraces New Challenge with Angel City FC Amidst Personal Adjustments

In a move that has captured the attention of the soccer world, Katie Zelem, the former Manchester United captain, has joined Angel City FC for the remainder of the NWSL season. Despite the sudden nature of the opportunity and the challenges of relocating to the United States, Zelem is eager to embrace this new chapter in her career.

A Difficult Decision

Zelem, known for her strong leadership and midfield prowess, had been contemplating her next move as she sought a new challenge. Although she had several options, including remaining in England or continuing her career in Europe, the prospect of joining Angel City FC presented a unique set of considerations. As a homebody with strong ties to her family and friends in Manchester, the distance to Los Angeles was a significant factor.

“When I heard the news from Angel City, I thought, ‘That’s a far trip on a plane.’ It took me a bit of time to process it, but when I really thought about it, the pros definitely outweigh the cons of how far the travel is,” Zelem shared.

Seeking Advice and Insight

Before finalizing her decision, Zelem sought advice from her friend and now teammate, Claire Emslie, who was initially set to be a bridesmaid at the same wedding this summer but had to miss it due to a game commitment. Zelem also received valuable insights from former Manchester United teammates Christen Press and Tobin Heath, who provided her with a sense of the club’s environment and game-day atmosphere.

“Gemma Bonner also told me that every game in the NWSL is miles away,” Zelem said with a laugh. “I’ll obviously have to adapt to and get a lot of series on my iPad, I think,” she added, highlighting the practical adjustments she’ll need to make.

Aiming for Championships

With a rich background in competitive play, Zelem is focused on contributing to Angel City FC’s success and aiming for championships. Her leadership experience and skills were highlighted by ACFC General Manager Angela Hucles Mangano.

“Katie is a wonderful addition to our squad at the perfect time,” Mangano stated. “She has honed leadership skills at high levels as the captain of Manchester United, is a skilled midfielder with elite-level football acumen, and her desire to bring championships to LA was palpable upon first communication. We are excited to welcome her.”

Angel City FC made a notable impact in their first-ever Summer Cup tournament, reaching the semi-finals and remaining undefeated in their initial group stage games. Despite a narrow 1-0 defeat to Gotham FC, the team is poised for growth and improvement. Zelem’s arrival is expected to bolster the team’s chances as they continue their season.

“Angel City is a really ambitious team,” Zelem said. “They want to win championships and that’s something that matches my ambition. I’m not moving for the lifestyle, the sun, or whatever may be the other positives of coming to Los Angeles. I’m going there to win, so, it’s always my ambition to go somewhere that strives to be the best.”

As Zelem embarks on this new journey with Angel City FC, her commitment to achieving success and her adaptability to new challenges will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike. With her expertise and drive, Zelem is set to make a significant impact on her new team and contribute to their pursuit of excellence in the NWSL.
