Rivera’s anticipated departure coincides with Harris maintaining his focus on the ongoing rebuilding efforts for the Commanders as of December 18, 2023.
According to sources cited by Dianna Russini of THE ATHLETIC, Commanders coach Ron Rivera and “some front office members will be fired” at the conclusion of the season. Since taking over the team, new owner Josh Harris has reportedly envisioned retaining Rivera until the end of the season and then making changes.
Jerry Brewer, writing in The Washington Post, noted that with the removal of longstanding problematic ownership, unenjoyable football now stands as the primary issue. Rivera, seen more as a babysitter than an architect, was expected to have a dignified exit this season, reflecting the new ownership’s respect for his role in stabilizing the organization during a period of significant change.
However, the timing of Rivera’s departure now appears inconsequential. Harris aims to distinguish himself from the previous owner, Daniel Snyder, by adopting a methodical approach, setting a proper organizational tone, and avoiding impulsive decisions in the competitive sports business marked by both success and failure on the scoreboard.
