Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack gave a comprehensive evaluation of the defense on Monday following the USF game. While he praised certain aspects, he expressed frustration with others, with one issue drawing particular criticism.
“I’m extremely disappointed with our lack of takeaways,” Wommack stated. “Their team created three turnovers, while we had none. Being minus-three in turnover margin is absolutely unacceptable for our defense.”
In the previous game against Western Kentucky, Alabama (2-0) had two interceptions by Keon Sabb in the first quarter alone.
“This is something we have to focus on every day,” Wommack continued. “It’s what we preach, what we believe in, and it didn’t show up this game. We need to keep pushing to make it happen on game day.”
Despite the lack of takeaways, Alabama still won 42-16 over South Florida. However, when the game was close late in the fourth quarter, a turnover could have been beneficial.
Wommack also expressed disappointment in the number of explosive runs allowed by the defense but acknowledged several positive aspects, including key stops and holding South Florida to field goals during red zone trips.
“Defensively, we stepped up in critical moments, which was encouraging,” Wommack said. “Younger players rose to the occasion, and the leadership on the sideline and field was evident. We forced eight 3-and-outs and had 13 ‘game-changers.’ In situational downs, we dominated.”
Looking ahead, Wommack’s defense will be tested on the road as Alabama faces Wisconsin on Saturday (11 a.m. CT, ESPN) at Camp Randall Stadium.
