Dennis Rodman is urging fans to “do their own research,” and he’s clearly frustrated. It’s uncommon to see the NBA legend this upset; usually, it’s others who find themselves in his crosshairs. This time, however, his ire is directed at Houston rapper Travis Scott. The issue stems from Scott’s partnership with Nike’s Jordan Brand and the well-known reverse swoosh logo.
Scott’s reverse swoosh design, featured on the Air Jordan 1 and Nike Air Force 1 Low, has taken the sneaker market by storm. Fans embraced the distinctive style, making the shoes extremely popular. Yet Rodman insists this isn’t the first time the reverse swoosh has appeared.
He claims that he should receive credit for introducing the reverse swoosh in the 1990s, when he wore his own line of Nike shoes that included the flipped logo. Rodman is now challenging Scott and Nike, asserting that the rapper’s design isn’t original and that fans should acknowledge its true origins.
Despite the success of the Jordan Brand’s collaboration with Scott, which has sparked an incredible demand for his shoes, Rodman’s assertion that his designs from the ’90s were imitated by Scott has raised eyebrows. He believes features like the reverse swoosh were initially popularized through his signature Nike Ndestrukt shoes, which were showcased on Rodman’s first branded sneakers, the Air Darwin.
Regardless of the facts, Rodman has not held back in his criticism of Nike. In an interview at the Got Sole event in Chicago, he chastised the brand for failing to credit the original design. “I don’t know why Travis Scott is trying to copy the original DR—Dennis Rodman. Nike, you should be ashamed of yourself!” Rodman expressed.
Interestingly, Scott isn’t the first to incorporate the reverse swoosh; it appeared on the Kobe AD NXT in 2017. However, it was only after Scott’s releases that Rodman publicly called out both him and Nike. The first shoe with this design debuted in 2019 in a chocolate and beige colorway. Notably, Rodman has no personal animosity toward Scott.
Despite the controversy, Rodman recognizes Scott’s talent. He clarified that his criticism isn’t aimed at the rapper himself but rather at the lack of acknowledgment for the original design. Rodman praised Scott, saying, “I knew Travis back when he first started. He’s incredibly talented, and many consider him the biggest in the world. I give him credit.”
Still, Rodman stands firm in his claims. Holding one of Scott’s shoes, he encourages fans to examine the similarities closely. While we may not be experts, it’s clear that Rodman’s goal is to receive recognition for the original design.
