KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello is bringing on some former players this season.

Kirby Connell, a former graduate pitcher, will take on the role of quality control analyst, while utility player Ethan Payne will serve as a graduate assistant under Vitello.

Connell concluded his time at Tennessee by pitching in all three games of the College World Series Finals against Florida State, contributing to the Vols’ first National Championship.

Known for his distinctive mustache and colorful cleats, Connell became a fan favorite. Vitello frequently called on him in crucial moments, including game three of the CWS, where he struck out two batters to halt the Aggies’ momentum.

Having already been viewed as a “player-coach,” Connell’s official role is welcomed by fans who are glad to see him stay with the team.
