Packers’ Trade Speculation for Browns’ First-Round Cornerback Intensifies
The Green Bay Packers are in a strong position midway through the 2024 NFL season, boasting a 6-2 record and trailing the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions by just half a game. This makes their upcoming game against Detroit crucial.
The Lions have one of the most potent passing offenses in the league, which places pressure on the Packers’ secondary, especially given the uncertainty surrounding quarterback Jordan Love’s health.
Green Bay’s top cornerback, Jaire Alexander, also faces injury concerns after sustaining a knee injury in the recent victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Initial assessments suggest no structural damage, but he is classified as day-to-day.
To strengthen their defense against Detroit, the Packers may pursue Greg Newsome II, as suggested by Bleacher Report’s Mitch Milani. Newsome’s versatility would allow the Packers to enhance their roster, as he can play both inside and outside and is capable of filling various roles.
Drafted 26th overall by the Browns in 2021, Newsome has been a consistent starter, showcasing his agility and adaptability. At 6’0″ and 192 lbs, he has a solid frame and recently completed a standout season with 14 passes defended, achieving a 69.6 PFF grade, placing him among the top cornerbacks in the league. Although he has only two career interceptions, he is a reliable all-around player.
The Packers would benefit from an upgrade over Keisean Nixon, making Newsome an ideal target.
