TORONTO — John Tavares had every right to sulk or express his frustration.
The Toronto Maple Leafs shifted their captaincy from the experienced center to the team’s star forward.
Tavares had served as captain in hockey’s largest market for five years, and he wasn’t going to let any hurt feelings affect his drive or mindset.
The Maple Leafs are now seeing the rewards of that mentality.
On Friday, Tavares netted his sixth and seventh goals of the season — including the game-winning goal on a second-period power play — in Toronto’s 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
The 34-year-old forward has developed strong chemistry with wingers William Nylander and Max Pacioretty on the Leafs’ second line. However, it’s also been remarkable how Tavares has embraced his role alongside Auston Matthews as the team’s focal point.
“His unwavering focus and work ethic stand out,” said Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly. “You always know what to expect from him, and I think that’s an underrated trait. He puts in the work and effort. He’s just a true professional.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing with him, especially this year, given everything that’s happened. The way he’s handled the past few months, showing up and getting to work, is truly admirable.”
The Oakville, Ont., native is fully aware of where he stands in his career, now entering its later stages.
“I just focus on doing what I need to do to help this team win,” Tavares said. “I’ve always believed in myself and the impact I can have on the game, as well as the level I can play at. I know the effort I put in, how much I enjoy playing, and the excitement I feel coming to the rink every day to compete. I love playing with these guys and being here — it’s special.
“Just go out, enjoy it, have fun, and give it everything you’ve got.”
Like Rielly, Leafs winger Mitch Marner is also in his seventh season playing alongside Tavares.
“He’s an incredible competitor,” said Marner, who is currently on a seven-game point streak. “You’re thankful to have him on your team every day.”
Tavares has recorded 463 goals, 590 assists, and 1,053 points over 1,123 career regular-season games.
Toronto head coach Craig Berube, now in his first month at the helm, has been impressed with Tavares’ performance.
“I think he handled the captaincy change really well,” Berube said. “In his mind, it was the right decision. He’s playing excellent for us. He’s just so skilled in tight spaces with the puck.”
“He does all the little things right.”
It’s those small details — both on the ice and in the locker room — that have helped Tavares reach this point in his career, and he wasn’t going to change his approach.
“You’re always aware of how things evolve or what might be a little different,” he said. “You adapt… I just continue to trust what I do and contribute to the team the best I can.”
