Rory Gallagher’s legendary 1961 Fender Stratocaster has been secured for donation to the National Museum of Ireland (NMI) following its recent sale at a Bonhams auction in London. Purchased for approximately €1 million by Live Nation Gaiety Ltd, the guitar will be added to Ireland’s national collection as a tribute to Gallagher’s impact on the music world. This acquisition, facilitated with support from Ireland’s Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media, ensures that Gallagher’s fans will have access to one of his most iconic instruments.
Minister Catherine Martin expressed excitement about the guitar’s return, emphasizing Gallagher’s role in establishing Ireland’s rock music reputation globally. Donal Gallagher, Rory’s brother, also conveyed gratitude for the support and love shown toward his brother’s legacy during the auction. The NMI plans to display the guitar, allowing fans from all over to connect with Gallagher’s legacy and witness a piece of Ireland’s cultural history.
