This winter, Boston may see the relocation of a former fan favorite.
A player who played for the Boston Red Sox for the first eight seasons of his career might be included in one of this winter’s more noteworthy trades.
According to reports, one former core member is up for trade this offseason and is probably going to be dealt.
In an attempt to cut payroll, the Minnesota Twins have already “aggressively tried to move” catcher Christian Vázquez, as FanSided’s Robert Murray disclosed on Foul Territory on Wednesday.
In 102 games during the previous season, Vázquez hit.223 with 19 extra-base hits, including six home runs, 32 RBIs, and a.598 OPS (65 OPS+).
Since departing the Red Sox at the 2022 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline, the 33-year-old pitcher’s career has quickly declined.
In 698 Red Sox games, Vázquez hit.262 with 183 extra-base hits, including 54 home runs, 266 RBIs, and a.700 OPS (86 OPS+).
The Boston team’s core for the 2018 World Series Championship season and the 2021 postseason run included the steady-handed backstop.
But Vázquez hasn’t played as well since then. Over the next two seasons, he owes twenty million dollars. Minnesota would probably have to swallow a portion of the deal in order to move that contract.
A return to Boston for Vázquez would be intriguing, as he would probably see an increase in play. But as 2024 approaches, Connor Wong has cemented himself as the starting catcher, and Reese McGuire completes a flawless platoon split at a significantly lower cost.
