The Boston Red Sox have reportedly expressed interest in superstar free agent Alex Bregman, according to Jon Heyman. Heyman noted that if Bregman were to join the team, current third baseman Rafael Devers would shift to first base.
“The Red Sox inquired and could be a fit for Bregman if they move Rafael Devers to first,” Heyman reported.
Bregman, who hit .260/.315/.453/.768 last season with 26 home runs and 30 doubles, is also regarded as one of MLB’s top defensive third basemen. Despite his talent and winning pedigree, there are compelling reasons for the Red Sox to steer clear of signing him.
At 30 years old, Bregman is reportedly seeking an 11-year, $350 million contract—an amount exceeding Devers’ deal. This is significant, considering Devers is widely viewed as one of the best third basemen in the league and is just entering his prime. Additionally, Devers has publicly stated he has no desire to switch positions, and forcing a move could lead to dissatisfaction within the clubhouse.
Adding Bregman would not only create a positional conflict but also leave the Sox with less financial flexibility to address other key needs, such as acquiring top-tier pitchers or a right-handed bat with a more reasonable contract. The exception to this would be if the team were to pursue Juan Soto, as the Red Sox are reportedly willing to offer him the largest contract in franchise history.
Given the circumstances, it seems unlikely the Sox will pursue Bregman, opting instead to focus their resources on more strategic acquisitions.
