The Tennessee Titans’ coordinators gave a final presentation to the team’s supporters this season, and Tim Kelly’s comment will stick in my head during the offseason.
There have been some of the worst offensive line plays in NFL history, and to be honest, some of the worst offensive line plays in franchise history, for fans to watch.
No one has been particularly good, but the left tackle position has been particularly bad. The Tennessee Titans’ tackle performance has been appalling. It is gotten so bad that despite receiving more assistance than any other tackle in the NFL save the Minnesota Vikings, the tackles have given up a league-high 25% of the team’s pressures.
Why then have the Titans’ left tackle problems been so severe? Andre Dillard, who has been the worst offensive tackle in the NFL this season by almost every metric, was the biggest addition of Mike Vrabel and Ran Carthon’s first offseason collaboration.
Jaelyn Duncan, a rookie who was not expected to play this season, is behind him. From what I have seen, he has been guided by Andre Dillard.
Although they selected Peter Skoronski in the first round of the draft, the Tennessee Titans had the opportunity to address this. The Tennessee Titans made what appeared to be a wise decision given the excitement surrounding Skoronski and the team’s confidence in Andre Dillard.
The Tennessee Titans did not choose wisely.
Sadly, it does not seem like Skoronski is the “can’t-miss” prospect that everyone had been predicting. Skoronski was a left tackle at Northwestern University in college, so there would always be a learning curve when he first started, but that was expected to be a temporary setback. Rather, it has been a barrier, and he has not looked good for the past month.
Tim Kelly stated the following when asked to assess Peter Skoronski today:
It is a great question that Paul Kuharsky poses there, and since training camp, fans have been pleading with the Tennessee Titans to address it. The Tennessee Titans lied to fans from the start, as there has never been a reported rep where Skoronski was asked to play left tackle.
This coaching staff began preaching about improving the offensive line as soon as the 2022 season concluded, with the goal of starting “the best five” players on the field and adding quality offensive linemen. Poor evaluation and even worse coaching have left them with the worst left tackle in the NFL and a below-average guard, even though they had a better left tackle on their roster from day one.
Tennessee Titans fans should be furious at this team for acting as though they have it all figured out in spite of having lost two straight seasons. Fans should be afraid that this staff has reached their limit and that the team will not improve until they make some major changes, regardless of how much money this team has or how high the draft pick is.
