The Boston Red Sox still have time to make a significant move, but fans will likely become restless soon.
After missing out on Juan Soto, the offseason feels like it’s truly underway. Although the big dream didn’t come through, Boston still needs to address key areas, particularly securing a new number-one starting pitcher.
Here’s the challenge: if Soto’s massive $765 million deal pushes up pitching salaries, the Red Sox may face steep costs to sign their new ace. With other high-budget teams also targeting free-agent pitchers, a trade may be the more feasible route.
Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox is a top name being mentioned for a potential trade, but another pitcher has recently entered the conversation: Luis Castillo of the Seattle Mariners. According to Cody Williams of FanSided, Castillo could be a great fit for Boston.
Castillo, with three years left on his $108 million contract, could be a solid number two starter, earning $24.15 million annually over the next three years, plus a $25 million option for 2028. Williams points out that the Mariners may be open to trading Castillo, especially if it helps strengthen their offense, which has been lacking in recent years. The Red Sox have players like Masataka Yoshida or Wilyer Abreu that could be part of a trade package, making Castillo a good fit for Boston.
If the Red Sox included both Yoshida and Abreu, and possibly covered part of Yoshida’s salary, this trade could become realistic.
Could Castillo be starting for Boston on Opening Day? It’s certainly a possibility.
