Running back David Montgomery suffered an MCL injury to his knee during Sunday’s 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field, a source familiar with the situation told the *Free Press* on Monday. The team is still evaluating the injury to determine its severity and the next steps for Montgomery’s recovery.
The update on Montgomery came shortly after the Lions announced that defensive tackle Alim McNeill had torn his ACL and cornerback Carlton Davis had fractured his jaw, adding to the team’s growing list of setbacks.
Montgomery played only 30% of Detroit’s offensive snaps on Sunday, totaling 24 snaps, per Pro Football Reference. He left the game limping after a pass protection block on a fourth-down conversion attempt in the second quarter. The Lions, trailing by two touchdowns early, struggled to establish their running game, managing just 15 carries for 48 yards in the loss.
With key players sidelined, the Lions face significant challenges as they look to regroup and push forward in the season.
Montgomery returned to the game in the second half, recording one carry for no gain and catching four passes. However, fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs took on most of the workload during the Lions’ comeback attempt.
Montgomery, who signed a two-year extension with Detroit earlier this year, had been splitting backfield duties with Gibbs to create one of the NFL’s most dynamic running back duos. Over 14 games, Montgomery amassed 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 185 carries. With Gibbs leading the team with 1,047 rushing yards, he will now take over as the primary back, with Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki stepping into supporting roles.
Gibbs and Montgomery were aiming to become the first running back duo to each surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a season since Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams achieved the feat with the 2009 Panthers.
Montgomery’s injury was initially reported by ESPN.
