The Pittsburgh Steelers won’t entertain the idea of pursuing one of the prominent names available in the market.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to bring in an external candidate for the role of offensive coordinator, with a preference for someone who has previous experience as an NFL play-caller and a strong background in quarterback development. One potential candidate discussed in recent years is former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. Despite his Super Bowl win and desire to return to coaching after being fired, a Pittsburgh insider, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic, has ruled out Leftwich as the next offensive coordinator for the Steelers.
During an interview on 93.7 The Fan, Kaboly stated definitively, “It’s not gonna be Leftwich,” emphasizing that he could provide more information on who will not be selected than who the actual choice will be. Head coach Mike Tomlin has outlined the importance of the next offensive coordinator having expertise in working with quarterbacks and the ability to maximize the existing talent on the Steelers’ roster.
Tomlin expressed his vision, stating, “I want us to be versatile and dynamic. Obviously, we have to score more points. We have to keep defenses off balance. I want to utilize all the talent we have at our disposal.” Kaboly revealed that Team President Art Rooney II will play a significant role in the hiring process, and discussions with potential candidates are expected to commence during the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, with Rooney participating in the decision-making process.
