The Packers may consider benching a beloved coach following a previous refusal.
Three years ago, Matt LaFleur of the Packers attempted to recruit Jim Leonhard, the Wisconsin defensive coordinator and former NFL veteran, to fill the same position in Green Bay. Leonhard underwent the interview process with LaFleur and other team members and had the opportunity to take the job, but ultimately declined. Consequently, LaFleur hired Joe Barry as the Packers’ defensive coordinator.
After three seasons, Barry faced significant criticism and was recently dismissed by LaFleur. With the position now vacant again and Leonhard available following his departure from Wisconsin due to coaching changes, there’s been growing support, especially on social media, for Leonhard to assume the role.
However, veteran Packers reporter Pete Dougherty suggests that while Leonhard could be considered for the position, it might not be straightforward. LaFleur might hesitate due to Leonhard’s prior refusal, despite the implied offer, and question his commitment.
Although Leonhard’s candidacy garners widespread support, some concerns arise regarding his coaching experience. While he had a successful tenure at Wisconsin and boasts a decade-long NFL playing career, his coaching experience is limited to seven years at the collegiate level. Additionally, his last NFL involvement was a decade ago. Given the Packers’ recent playoff success, there are reservations about whether Leonhard’s potential hiring would be too much of a risk.
Overall, while Leonhard presents an intriguing option, his lack of recent NFL involvement and limited coaching tenure raise questions about his readiness for the demanding role of defensive coordinator in the NFL.
