Sherrone Moore elaborates on the inception and significance of Michigan football’s latest rallying slogan.

Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore concluded his introductory press conference with a commitment, citing the words of Jack Harbaugh: “We will continue to approach every day with unparalleled enthusiasm, and I assure you: We will excel.” During Moore’s tenure in Ann Arbor, “smash” evolved into a rallying cry, initially for the offensive line and then for the entire offense. Now, as the 37-year-old assumes the role of head coach, it becomes a guiding principle for the program.

Jim Harbaugh might have redefined “smash” as an acronym, akin to “dawg” for Disciplined Athlete With Grit or “bet” for Bringing Everyone Together. Perhaps for him, “smash” could translate to “Superior Men Achieving Selflessly and Hitting.” However, Moore’s interpretation stands on its own.

The concept originated when Moore assumed responsibility for the offensive line at Michigan in 2021. It embodies a mentality of aggression and unity, symbolizing a commitment to teammates, the university, and oneself.

The results on the field speak for themselves, with Moore guiding the offensive line to consecutive Joe Moore Awards in 2021 and 2022, recognizing them as the nation’s best unit. Moore’s offensive strategies in 2023 propelled the Wolverines to a national championship, notably exemplified by 32 consecutive running plays in a victory against Penn State.

Athletic Director Warde Manuel commended Moore’s leadership qualities, citing his calm demeanor and decisive actions, particularly during the Penn State game.

Jim Harbaugh has also praised Moore, emphasizing his prowess as an educator. Moore’s teaching abilities were evident from his initial interview with Michigan in 2018, where he demonstrated run-blocking techniques, leaving a lasting impression on Harbaugh.

Six years after that pivotal interview, Moore and his “smash” philosophy now guide Michigan football.
