According to sources, the Dallas Cowboys are interviewing two seasoned former NFL head coaches as soon as possible in their quest for a new defensive coordinator. Ron Rivera and Mike Zimmer will be interviewed by the Cowboys for the important position, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports NFL Insider.
After Dan Quinn, who served in that capacity from 2021 to 2023, took the head coaching post with the Washington Commanders, the position of defensive coordinator became vacant. The Cowboys displayed a strong defense under Quinn’s leadership, finishing in the top 10 every year for the three years.
Mike Zimmer, who led the Minnesota Vikings from 2014 to 2021, has an outstanding 72-56-1 coaching record. Zimmer has a notable background with the Cowboys, having worked as an assistant from 1994 to 2006 and winning a Super Bowl ring in 1995 while coaching the defensive backs.
However, Ron Rivera also offers a plethora of knowledge from his coaching positions with the Washington Commanders (2020–2023) and the Carolina Panthers (2011–2019). During his tenure in Carolina, Rivera guided the Panthers to four postseason trips and an appearance in Super Bowl 50. Rivera finished his four years with the Commanders with a 26-40-1 record.
The Cowboys are making a calculated attempt to preserve the defensive hierarchy of the organization, as seen by the possible hiring of Rivera or Zimmer as defensive coordinator. Both coaches have a track record of accomplishment and insightful knowledge of how to create effective defensive teams.
The Cowboys and their supporters will be watching the interviews with great anticipation to see who will assume the pivotal position of defensive coordinator in order to carry on the team’s legacy of fielding a strong defense in the next few seasons.
