Sources from Football Insider indicate that Jon McLaughlin is unlikely to receive a new contract offer from Rangers. Despite the 2023-24 season being underway, McLaughlin has not seen any playing time for the team.
This lack of involvement stems from Jack Butland’s arrival as a free transfer last summer, which led to McLaughlin being excluded from matchday squads.
The veteran goalkeeper’s situation changed following the retirement of Allan McGregor, with Butland assuming the starting role and Robby McCrorie being promoted to the backup position.
Last season, McLaughlin made 16 appearances across various competitions, conceding 18 goals while securing eight clean sheets.
Notably, he contributed to Rangers’ Champions League qualification by featuring in five matches. Since joining from Sunderland in 2020, McLaughlin has amassed a total of 46 appearances for Rangers. Additionally, he has represented Scotland twice at the senior level and was part of the Euro 2020 squad.
In contrast, Butland has been a prominent figure this season, featuring in 38 matches and maintaining 19 clean sheets while conceding 29 goals. Despite Rangers currently occupying second place in the Scottish Premiership, they trail Celtic only on goal difference
