Ex-Houston Astros starting pitcher is drawing extensive interest from multiple teams.

Following the addition of Josh Hader to bolster their bullpen, the Houston Astros are exploring additional pitching options ahead of the upcoming season.

General manager Dana Brown hinted at the potential for acquiring another starting pitcher. If this materializes, it’s probable that either J.P. France or Hunter Brown will transition to a bullpen role for the upcoming year.

Alternatively, the Astros might consider reuniting with one of their former starters. According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, Jake Odorizzi is seeking a Major League contract and has garnered interest from as many as 12 teams.

Odorizzi, a former All-Star, last pitched in 2022 with the Atlanta Braves after being traded by Houston for reliever Will Smith. Initially signing a two-year, $23.5 million deal with the Astros in March 2021, Odorizzi recorded a 10-10 record with a 4.04 ERA across 36 appearances and 35 starts.

However, his performance didn’t meet expectations during his time with the Astros, leading to his eventual trade by the front office.

A shoulder injury necessitated microscopic surgery, causing him to sit out the entire 2023 season following his trade from the Braves to the Texas Rangers.

Morosi indicated that the 33-year-old is now pitching without limitations. He has showcased his skills on the mound in front of various teams.

It will be intriguing to see what role he assumes in 2024 after his absence last year.

Throughout his career, Odorizzi has primarily been a starter, appearing in relief only four times. Teams seeking cost-effective starting options might consider utilizing him in their rotation, while contenders could view him as a valuable depth or innings-eating pitcher.

Given the reported interest from multiple clubs, the former Houston pitcher may soon find a new team.
