Gomes | ‘I feel I can become much better’

Joao Gomes attributes much of his recent success on the field to the guidance and collaboration with Gary O’Neil. He seized the opportune moment to score his first goals of the season during Saturday’s match, securing a significant victory for Wolves against Tottenham Hotspur.

Gomes, 23, capitalized on a corner from Pablo Sarabia to head in a goal and later concluded a counter-attack initiated by Pedro Neto with a well-timed arrival into the box—a facet of his game that he has been encouraged to utilize by O’Neil. This newfound freedom has proven beneficial for Wolves.

Expressing gratitude towards O’Neil, Gomes stated, “I feel like I can reach new heights under his guidance. Our coach allows me the flexibility to evolve into the player I aspire to be, encouraging me to venture into the box more often.”

Reflecting on his performance, Gomes remarked, “Scoring two goals in a match is a rarity for me, especially considering my usual positioning on the field.” He recalled scoring at least one goal during his time in Brazil but highlighted the significance of his recent achievements with Wolves.

Regarding his celebration, Gomes shared his excitement about expecting his first child on May 16th, expressing joy about this upcoming milestone in his life.

Despite not being in regular contact with O’Neil since his departure from Flamengo, Gomes remains focused on his responsibilities on the field and hopes to excel to the extent of earning a spot on the national team roster.

Acknowledging the absence of his compatriot Matheus due to injury, Gomes expressed hope for his swift recovery, emphasizing the importance of his contribution to the team.
