Experienced forward poised for remarkable comeback to the NRL.

Former Newcastle Knights, Sydney Roosters, Penrith Panthers, and Leeds Rhinos prop Zane Tetevano is reportedly on the verge of an astonishing return to the NRL in 2024, this time with the Canterbury Bulldogs.

Having last competed in the NRL in 2020, notably appearing in Penrith’s grand final defeat to the Melbourne Storm, the now 33-year-old forward transitioned to the English Super League in 2021. During his tenure with the Leeds Rhinos over two and a half years, Tetevano amassed 44 games.

However, Tetevano faced adversity in 2023 when he suffered a stroke during training with the club, necessitating surgery to mend a heart defect. The swift actions and medical intervention by the Rhinos’ staff were credited with saving Tetevano’s life. Nevertheless, doubts lingered regarding his return to rugby league.

His trajectory shifted during last year’s Pacific Championships, where he participated in two games for the Cook Islands. Now, according to News Corp, the New Zealand-born forward has finalized a contract to join the Bulldogs with immediate effect.

Canterbury has been eager to bolster their forward line, particularly after focusing on utility signings in the recent off-season. Despite securing Poasa Faamausili from the Dolphins and Josh Curran, who was granted a release from the New Zealand Warriors late in the off-season, the team felt the need for additional reinforcements.

Their aspirations were dampened early in the off-season when Siosiua Taukeiaho failed a routine medical examination, preventing his transfer to the club. Tetevano’s potential arrival, pending official confirmation, offers a solution to this setback, with the seasoned forward expected to make contributions during the 2024 season.

Tetevano boasts 121 NRL appearances alongside his 44 outings in the Super League. He has also represented New Zealand in three Tests and donned the Cook Islands jersey on ten occasions.
