The former second baseman for the Yankees and Mets, Robinson Cano, is set to join the Diablos Rojos of the Mexican Baseball League, as announced by the team on Friday. They shared the news on X along with a compilation of highlights from his illustrious 17-year MLB career. Details regarding the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Cano, aged 41, will have the opportunity to face his former team, the Yankees, on March 24th and 25th during an exhibition series in Mexico City. He enjoyed considerable success during his time with the Yankees, boasting an impressive .309/.355/.504 batting line over nine seasons and contributing to the team’s World Series victory in 2009.
Departing the Yankees before the 2014 season, Cano signed a significant 10-year contract with the Mariners. However, midway through the deal, he returned to New York with the Mets for the 2019 season. Despite his talent, his tenure with the Mets was marred by a suspension for violating MLB’s performance-enhancing drugs policy in 2018, and he struggled to find consistency on the field. After being released by the Mets in May 2022, he briefly played for the Padres and Braves but faced further challenges.
Cano’s journey takes him to the Mexican Baseball League now, marking a new chapter in his career after his time in Major League Baseball.
