With the team currently in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division and facing slim playoff prospects, Fitzgerald felt the need to make this decision.
Fitzgerald acknowledged the difficulty of parting ways with Ruff, noting their strong relationship and Ruff’s positive qualities. Travis Green, the associate coach and former head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, will step in as head coach until the end of the 2023-24 season. Green brings valuable experience from coaching at various levels, and Fitzgerald expressed confidence in his ability to lead the team effectively.
This move comes after Ruff’s fourth season with the Devils, during which they made one playoff appearance but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference second round. Green’s tenure as head coach begins with a home game against the Florida Panthers at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Wednesday.
