Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou delivers harsh criticism following 28-18 NRL defeat against Broncos.

Sydney coach Jason Demetriou strongly criticized the Rabbitohs following their 28-18 defeat to the Brisbane Broncos at Lang Park on Thursday night. The Rabbitohs have now suffered two losses in a row, with Demetriou attributing their downfall to a lack of concentration, evident in their completion rate of only 65 percent.

Describing the match as a series of errors adding undue pressure on his team, Demetriou emphasized the need to improve their performance. He challenged his players to harness their effort and determination, stressing the importance of rectifying their mistakes to unleash their true potential as a team.

ABC Sport will provide live coverage of every round of the AFL and NRL seasons in 2024. The Rabbitohs previously lost 36-24 to Manly in the Las Vegas season opener earlier this month. They anticipate the return of high-profile signing Jack Wighton for their upcoming match against the Sydney Roosters in round three.

Despite eagerly awaiting Wighton’s debut for the club, Demetriou cautioned against relying solely on the former Canberra Raiders star to solve their issues. While acknowledging Wighton’s strengths, particularly his experience and physicality, Demetriou stressed the importance of addressing their collective mistakes to avoid burdening Wighton with defensive responsibilities.

Wighton, who earned the 2020 Dally M Medal, is completing the final week of a three-match suspension carried over from the previous season. He is expected to play in the centres against the Roosters.

In contrast, Broncos coach Kevin Walters acknowledged his team’s imperfect performance, recognizing the need for improvement ahead of their grand final rematch against Penrith in round three. Despite securing the win, Walters highlighted areas for development, emphasizing the significance of victories early in the season.

The Broncos previously suffered a 20-10 defeat to the Roosters in their season opener in Las Vegas.
