Hurricanes defeat Oilers with four goals in the first quarter.

November 23 – On Wednesday night in Raleigh, North Carolina, the host Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oilers 6-3 thanks to goals and assists from Teuvo Teravainen and Seth Jarvis in a four-goal first period.

The Hurricanes have won eight of their last 11 games thanks to goals from Jesper Fast, Jack Drury, Martin Necas, and Brent Burns’ empty netter that fended off an Oilers rally in the closing minutes. Pyotr Kochetkov of Carolina stopped 13 of 15 shots in relief of Antti Raanta, who entered the game in the middle of a 16-0-1 home run but left for a precautionary reason after one period, according to Sportsnet.

After three straight wins, Edmonton went on a three-game losing streak that resulted in 17 goals scored, with Zach Hyman scoring twice and Stuart Skinner being replaced. Edmonton had scored four goals on 12 shots.

Carolina scored twice in a 35-second span to take the lead. The puck slid past Jordan Martinook of the Hurricanes with 10:43 left in the first period, allowing Fast to score. After that, Michael Bunting set up a two-on-one play, and Drury scored his first goal of the year with a cross-slot pass from Bunting.

With 8:37 remaining in the first, Sebastian Aho slid the puck across the top of the crease, setting up Teravainen for his 10th goal of the year while Skinner was out of position, giving the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead. With 5:13 left, Jarvis then got past the Oilers’ defense and sent in a wrister to pursue Skinner.

With 2:47 remaining before the first intermission, Edmonton broke a three-game power-play drought to score. Five seconds into the man-advantage, Hyman dribbled in his own rebound to make it a 4-1 game.
