Former Tigers manager now works as a Yankees bench coach
DETROIT — The New York Yankees have hired Brad Ausmus, a former manager of the Detroit Tigers, to be their bench coach reporting to manager Aaron Boone.
The club made the announcement last week.
Carlos Mendoza, who relocated to become the new manager of the New York Mets, is replaced by Ausmus.
Ausmus, 54, spent parts of eighteen seasons as a big-league catcher, three of which he spent with Detroit. Despite his lack of on-field coaching or managing experience, he was brought in by the Tigers before the 2014 season to take Jim Leyland’s place as manager.
In 2014, the Tigers qualified for the postseason but lost in the opening round. After finishing the 2017 season with a 314-332 record, he was let go.
In 2019, Ausmus took over as Los Angeles Angels’ manager. He finished with a 72-90 record and was fired.
In 2022, he served as the Oakland Athletics’ bench coach.
Earlier this year, Ausmus was a finalist for the position of general manager of the Houston Astros. Executive Dana Brown of the Atlanta Braves eventually took that position.
After Dusty Baker announced his retirement, Brown interviewed Ausmus for the position of field manager with the Astros. Joe Espada, the Astros bench coach, eventually took over that role.
The Yankees finished in fourth place in the American League East in 2023 with a mere 82-80 record. During Boone’s six seasons as manager, it was the first time the Yankees had missed the postseason.
