An NFC team has thrown one former Cleveland Browns assistant coach into the fire.
Chris Tabor is currently the Carolina Panthers’ interim head coach after serving as the Browns’ special teams coach from 2011 to 2017. As the special teams coordinator for Carolina, Tabor is in his first season there. The Panthers hired a veteran coach who they thought could at least keep things under control until the end of the season after firing Frank Reich.
Tabor’s only head coaching experience comes from his 2001 season as Culver-Stockton’s coach in the NAIA.
Even though it will only be for a few weeks, 52-year-old Tabor is getting his first opportunity to be the head coach of an NFL team.
With a weak roster and no first-round selection, the Panthers are in a difficult situation. Despite being selected first overall, rookie quarterback Bryce Young hasn’t demonstrated much. It is unlikely that Carolina will acquire a top coaching target.
Still, it’s great to see Tabor given a chance in the interim. Since 1993, he has coached at collegiate levels and gained a great deal of experience in the NFL.
