Reliever from the Seattle Mariners and former Minnesota Twins signs multi-year contract with Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds have reportedly inked veteran reliever Emilio Pagan to a multi-year contract in an effort to bolster their pitching staff.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports:

RHP Emilio Pagán and the Reds have reached a two-year agreement, according to a source. Transactional paperwork is still pending.

The financial terms are unknown at this time.

Pagan, a right-hander with 32 years of experience, is coming off a successful season with the Minnesota Twins. In 2023, he made 66 appearances for Minnesota, going 5-2 with a 2.99 ERA. He pitched 69.1 innings, striking out 65 batters.

The Twins advanced to the American League Division Series after winning the American League Central. The Reds are hoping Pagan can make the Queen City experience the same level of success. They went 82-80 last year, finishing third in the National League Central, and haven’t made the playoffs since the COVID 2020 season.

Pagan has spent seven years in the majors with the Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, and Twins. He debuted with Seattle in 2017 and owns a lifetime 22-18 record with a 3.71 ERA. He has struck out 456 batters in 400 career innings. He had 20 saves for the Rays in the 2019 season, so he certainly appears like he can slot into a high-leverage role for manager David Bell in Cincy.

In addition to adding Pagan, the Reds are looking to add to their starting rotation as well. Rumors over the last few days have indicated they are interested in acquiring starting pitchers Tyler Glasnow or Shane Bieber in a trade.
