This season, the Detroit Lions running back tandem may experience some uncommon air.

Jahmyr Gibbs’ early season easing and both players’ injuries caused a slight delay. However, David Montgomery and Josh Gibbs’ backfield has recently appeared to be exactly as the Detroit Lions had imagined.

Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery came up with a fitting moniker for Gibbs and Montgomery on Wednesday, according to Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News.

Some people enjoy jelly, while others prefer peanut butter. However, a lot of people find them attractive when combined, so that’s kind of where we stand with them both—we’re quite pleased with the progress.

Montgomery has a 39 to 33 carry advantage over Gibbs over the previous three games. However, Gibbs leads in total touches (46 to 41). Montgomery and Gibbs are on track to become the fifth running back tandem in Lions history to each have over 1,000 yards from scrimmage in a season, with 736 yards from scrimmage for Montgomery and 844 yards for Gibbs this season. The final pair was Joique Bell and Reggie Bush in 2013.

By season’s end, David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs might find themselves in unique NFL air.

Montgomery is on track to accumulate over 1,100 rushing yards in 14 games played this season, averaging 81 rushing yards per game (he has missed three). Gibbs is on pace to accumulate 943 rushing yards in 15 games at a rate of 62.9 rushing yards per game (he has missed two). However, Gibbs would reach 1,000 yards for the season if he continues to average 72.3 rushing yards per game.

Both Montgomery and Gibbs would become just the eighth pair in NFL history to record 1,000 yards on the ground in the same season if they did.

These are the seven pairs that have managed to pull it off.
