Tommy DeVito declined the Commanders’ offer of substantially more money in order to sign with the Giants.
Tommy DeVito’s life is going pretty well at the moment. As the starting quarterback for the New York Giants, the 25-year-old has a winning record and has gained considerable attention in the city.
It so happened that DeVito’s first two victories as a starting quarterback were against two teams hoping to sign him. After DeVito was not selected, his agent recently told NFL Media that the Washington Commanders made a much larger offer than the Giants. But in the end, DeVito signed with Big Blue because he was able to play for his hometown team and for Brian Daboll and his coaching staff.
After DeVito was left off of New York’s opening 53-man roster, the Patriots also made an inquiry about signing him. However, DeVito remained in New York once more, joining the Giants’ practice squad to begin the regular season.
When starter Daniel Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor were sidelined by injuries earlier in the season, DeVito was given the opportunity to step up and shine. On October 29, DeVito made his NFL debut against the Jets. A week later, he threw his first-ever touchdown pass against the Las Vegas Raiders. On November 12, he started his first-ever game against the Dallas Cowboys.
On November 19, DeVito had a breakthrough game against the Commanders after playing mediocrely up until then. DeVito recorded his first victory as an NFL starting quarterback by going 18 of 26 for 246 yards and three touchdowns against the team that originally desired him. He put on another strong showing during last Sunday’s victory over New England to build on that one.
A Giants team desperately in need of a boost has benefited from DeVito’s ascent.
