Brandon Turnage, a defensive back for the Tennessee Volunteers, has registered on the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Earlier on Monday, when the transfer portal opened, Tennessee had another defensive back log in. Brandon Turnage, a longtime contributor, is that defensive back.
Turnage is a redshirt senior cornerback who stands 6 feet 1 inch and weighs 186 pounds. He can play in the outside corner or slot/STAR position in a defensive scheme. His playing career began at Alabama, and in 2021 he transferred to Tennessee. When he replaced an injured Theo Jackson during a home game against South Carolina, he made a big impression on the market. He recorded 14 total tackles in this game, including 7 solo stops, and he won the SEC player of the week award. He recorded six tackles and one pass deflection in the 2023 campaign.
Turnage has started a few games in the past, but he hasn’t really had a lot of starting roles. At Tennessee, he frequently finds himself more of a supporting actor. Tennessee has already lost a number of DBs to the transfer portal as of this writing. Warren Burrell and Jack Luttrell are on this list. They will also lose important players like Jaylen McCollough and Kamal Hadden.
The transfer prospect’s eligibility to play for the team of his choosing will last for one season, after which he must advance to the next level. All indications indicate that players like Jordan Matthews, Rickey Gibson, Kaleb Beasley, John Slaughter, and others will receive some meaningful playing time in the defensive back room during the upcoming season, given the departure of these players.
Who Turnage plays for next is unknown, but whichever team signs him will get a physical corner with strong tackling skills who can make plays in the open field and limit big plays because of his high tackling traits.
