Dolphins Consider Adding Defensive Tackles from Free Agents
Trevon Coley, Carlos Davis, and Justin Ellis are three veteran defensive tackles that the Miami Dolphins worked out and who can strengthen the depth of the team.
Before December’s crucial stretch of games, the Miami Dolphins appear to be looking for defensive line support to bolster the trenches.
Trevon Coley, Carlos Davis, and Justin Ellis—three defensive linemen—were worked out by the Dolphins on Tuesday, as if they were looking to add some veteran players to their practice squad.
At this point, it’s unclear if the workout was driven by an injury or if Miami wants to swap out one of the two defensive linemen on the practice squad, Brandon Pili and Byron Cowart.
Coley was a standout student at Florida Atlantic University before leaving Miramar High. Since joining the NFL as an undrafted player in 2016, he has been a part of eight different teams, either as a member of the practice squad, training camp roster, or injured reserve.
In his 44 NFL games, he has started 31, and in those games, he has racked up 100 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and two recovered fumbles.
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Davis, a nose tackle from Nebraska, in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft. Over the course of three years, he appeared in 12 games for the Steelers and contributed 12 tickles.
In 2023, he made his final appearance for the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions.
Ellis joined the NFL in 2014 after being selected in the fourth round by the Raiders from Louisiana Tech.
Throughout his nine seasons with the Raiders, Ravens, and Giants, he has started 54 of 117 games and recorded 182 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Ellis participated in training camp with the Atlanta Falcons but was not included in the practice squad or 53-man roster.
Due to Jerome Baker’s Sunday knee injury against the Washington Commanders, the Dolphins are also in need of some linebacker assistance.
To try and strengthen the depth of that group, Miami will add a player who was previously selected in the first round.
On Wednesday, Reuben Foster, a 2017 first-round selection by the San Francisco 49ers, will be working out for the Dolphins. It’s unclear at this time if he will be the only inside linebacker going through drills, but when the Dolphins are trying to fill a void, they usually work out 2-4 players at a position.
