AKRON, Ohio — Doran Grant, a former standout player for Ohio State, has been named the new head football coach of the St. Vincent-St. Mary High School Fighting Irish.

“Tradition carries a great deal of responsibility. Grant remarked, “I could not be more excited for the opportunity to be back home,” following his selection as his alma mater’s next head football coach.

After Terry Cistone retires as head coach, Grant, an SVSM alumnus from 2011, will take over as the program’s tenth head coach.

According to Kyle Sasala, athletic director at STVM, “we are beyond excited to welcome Doran back home as our next head football coach.” “Our student-athletes will benefit from his very impressive playing and coaching experience both on and off the field.”

Under head coach Dan Boarman, Grant played four years as a letterman, receiver, kick returner, defensive back, and All-American at St. Vincent-St. Mary.

Mark Butterworth, president of STVM, stated, “Our committee unanimously felt that Doran was the best candidate to be the next head football coach for the Fighting Irish.” “His passion, drive, and dedication to the STVM community and the city of Akron will put the football program back on top of a hill in Akron.”

After graduating from high school, Grant continued his playing career at Ohio State, where he was a four-year letterman, captain of the team from 2013 to 2015, an All-Big Ten selection (first team in 2014; honorable mention in 2013), and a part of the squad that won the 2014 national championship.

Grant entered the 2015 NFL Draft following his senior year, and the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the fourth round.

During his NFL career, which lasted from 2015 to 2018, he played for the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Grant was a member of the Washington D.C. Defenders in the XFL in 2020 and the Atlanta Legends in the Alliance of American Football in 2019.

Grant had a distinguished playing career before taking on the role of defensive backs coach at Pickerington North High School in 2022–2023. Grant joined Elyria Catholic High School in March 2023 as the defensive coordinator, defensive backs coach, and coordinator of special teams.
