Washington Commanders Cut Danny Johnson, the cornerback
Danny Johnson, a cornerback for the Washington Commanders, was cut by the team.
One of the Washington Commanders’ defensive backs is leaving the team.
After Danny Johnson signed a two-year extension in March, the Commanders are cutting him, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“I thought Danny stepped in and did exactly what we’d hoped he would do, did the job that we needed him to do,” Ron Rivera said back in October. “He made some plays, played some excellent football, and demonstrated his intelligence by having the chance to intercept the ball on a fourth down. Rather, he brings it down, giving us excellent field position. That’s a very astute move, and Danny is certainly capable of doing those kinds of things.”
Johnson was given a lot more playing time as Emmanuel Forbes was substituted out. Rivera was evasive about Johnson receiving that much playing time going forward, even though the defense put on its best show of the year with him on the field more.
“As far as playtime, we’re going to continue to practice and work our guys, and we’re going to play the guys we believe give us the best opportunity to play football,” Rivera stated.
Johnson’s playing time decreased in the second half of the season after he started most of the defensive snaps in Weeks 6 and 7, which has now finally resulted in his release.
Cornerbacks Tariq Castro-Fields, Forbes, Christian Holmes, Benjamin St-Juste, and Kendall Fuller are still players for the Commanders.
