With Da’Jon Terry back for 2024, the Sooners DL gets a major boost.
Even though it feels like the Oklahoma Sooners have had a hectic week, on Thursday they got some more positive news. The Sooners have been awaiting the return of several of their star players from the 2023 campaign, as well as the departure of others.
Though they are still waiting on a few guys to decide, one very important player, if you will pardon the pun, announced his plans on Thursday. On social media, Da’Jon Terry declared that he would rejoin the Sooners in 2024.
The 321-pound, 6-foot-3 defensive tackle was arguably the best defensive lineman for the Sooners in 2023. During crucial goal-line stands, such as the one in the Red River Rivalry, he was the one who obstructed the defense’s middle.
His stats don’t really stand out. In the end, he recorded 17 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Nevertheless, your stats at that position are typically not spectacular unless you are a superstar like Aaron Donald, for instance. For the linebackers to be able to move around and make plays, that position is essential for blocking the middle and holding blocks.
He spent the entire season doing that, and going to the SEC requires having that kind of body. Before the next season, Oklahoma is going to need more players of that caliber. something that the portal is attempting to accomplish.
However, the Sooners needed Terry to return after losing Isaiah Coe and Jordan Kelley, and maybe Jacob Lacey will as well. If so, by the time 2024 rolls around, they could only lose two important defensive tackles.
