Ipswich Town should ensure that these two potential transfer situations do not unfold in the upcoming month.

Four and a half years ago, the Tractor Boys faced relegation to League One and endured three consecutive seasons without reaching the third-tier playoffs. However, in the 2022-23 season, they achieved a remarkable promotion, surpassing 100 goals in the process.

While the team made additions in the summer, the key contributors were predominantly players from their League One roster. Ipswich appears poised for a return to the Premier League after a 22-year absence.

As the January transfer window approaches, it presents an opportunity for Ipswich to strengthen their squad, but it also raises concerns about potential departures. Here are two transfer scenarios that Ipswich cannot afford to happen in the early part of 2024.

1. Yielding to Premier League interest in Leif Davis:

Leif Davis has been a standout performer for Ipswich since his arrival, contributing significantly to their success. The 23-year-old left-back, signed for over £1 million from Leeds United, justified his price tag with 14 assists during Ipswich’s promotion season and added nine more in the Championship. Premier League clubs, particularly West Ham United, have shown interest, but Ipswich must resist any offers, considering their promising trajectory.

2. Letting Sam Morsy go without a new contract:

Sam Morsy, a pivotal figure in Ipswich’s midfield, is instrumental in their playing style. Despite being 32 years old, he continues to display peak performance. With his contract set to expire, it’s surprising that a new deal hasn’t been agreed upon. Over the summer, clubs from Saudi Arabia expressed interest, and although no deal materialized, Ipswich cannot afford to lose their on-field leader. Even if a new contract isn’t finalized by January, the club should not entertain offers for Morsy, as he remains a crucial component of the starting eleven. While overseas pre-contract deals are possible, Ipswich should prioritize retaining Morsy for the current season.
