Penn State football is anticipated to recruit a wide receiver from Ohio State under the leadership of James Franklin.
A couple of years ago, Ryan Day successfully recruited the top wide receiver in the 2020 class, Julian Fleming, besting James Franklin and Penn State in the process. Despite being overshadowed by teammates like Marvin Harrison Jr., Emeka Egbuka, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Garrett Wilson, and Chris Olave during his four seasons at Ohio State, the Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania native accumulated 79 catches for 963 yards and seven touchdowns.
After the 2023 season, Fleming entered the transfer portal, and there are indications that he may sign with Penn State, according to 247 Sports projections. The site’s experts have given a high level of certainty, “crystal balling,” for Fleming joining the Nittany Lions. While circumstances may change, it appears increasingly probable that the 2024 Penn State roster will see a new No. 1 wide receiver.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound receiver didn’t blossom into the star many anticipated in high school, likened to a sapling in Redwood National Park struggling for resources. During his time with the Buckeyes, three NFL first-round draft picks were produced, and with Marvin Harrison Jr. likely declaring for the draft this season, that number is set to increase to four.
Given Penn State’s thin wide receiver depth, Fleming’s potential transfer fills a position of need, offering ample opportunities for him to fulfill the expectations of his high school talent projections.
Despite not receiving many targets, Fleming was willing to contribute in various roles. In 2023, he stood out as Ohio State’s second-highest-graded run blocker, according to Pro Football Focus, with a grade of 74.0 in his 232 run-blocking snaps, trailing only offensive tackle Josh Fryar.
As a receiver, Fleming averaged 1.42 yards per route run, considering an average target depth of 6.5 yards. Among Penn State receivers, only KeAndre Lambert-Smith had a higher yards per route run, with an average depth of target at 9.6.
If 247 Sports’ prediction holds true, Fleming’s role at Penn State will differ significantly. He is expected to be utilized more as a downfield receiver, potentially unlocking his full potential, similar to Jameson Williams at Alabama. Even if Fleming doesn’t achieve breakout statistical success, his blocking skills will still be valuable in aiding the run game.
Regarded as one of the top receivers in the market this offseason, Fleming’s potential transfer to Penn State presents an opportunity for James Franklin to demonstrate his ability to attract impactful transfers, particularly if he aims to beat Ohio State in the future.
