Aaron Rodgers of the New York Jets was asked about the possibility of retiring after the 2024 NFL season, to which he responded, “I don’t think so.”
New York Jets standout Aaron Rodgers currently doesn’t foresee ending his NFL career after the 2024 season.
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, when asked about the possibility of the upcoming season being his last, Rodgers responded, “I don’t think so… I don’t think next year will be my last year.” He expressed a renewed passion and love for the game since joining the Jets, emphasizing that he believes he can be effective well into his forties.
Rodgers described 2023 as a “lost year” due to a torn Achilles, a factor that contributed to speculation about his commitment beyond the season. The uncertainty surrounding Rodgers’ future was a subplot during his protracted departure from the Green Bay Packers in the offseason.
Jets owner Woody Johnson reportedly had concerns that acquiring Rodgers might only yield a one-year tenure, but the Jets ultimately secured Rodgers, and the four-time MVP restructured his contract to indicate a longer-term commitment. The restructuring involved Rodgers accepting reduced compensation, providing the franchise with increased payroll flexibility through 2025.
Rodgers clarified in August that he envisions a multi-year partnership with the Jets, expressing a desire to avoid creating future salary cap issues for the team after his playing career concludes.
The fact that Rodgers, now 40, is likely to have had minimal on-field action in 2023 appears to have influenced the outlook on his future. While retiring on a high note, such as winning a Super Bowl in 2024, could be tempting, the prevailing sentiment is that Rodgers may continue playing as long as he remains healthy and effective.
