Junior Colson Talks About Alabama Hiring A Former LB Coach From Michigan Football
When news broke that Alabama and Nick Saban were planning to bring George Helow on board for an undisclosed position with the Crimson Tide, some eyebrows went up.
A few weeks had passed since Alabama and Michigan faced each other in the Rose Bowl during the College Football Playoffs’ opening round. His most recent position was as a linebackers coach at Michigan in 2021 and 2022, so Saban hired Helow.
This season, Jim Harbaugh attempted to rehire Chris Partridge as the linebackers coach, but it ultimately fell through. But when Partridge returned to Ann Arbor, Helow found himself jobless.
Now that he is back in the collegiate ranks, Helow will coach against very familiar opponents in his first game back. Junior Colson is a linebacker in his junior year.
Colson spent his first two years in Ann Arbor as a player for Helow. Colson made a joke about how Alabama’s hiring suggests that Alabama may be afraid of the Wolverines and that they need to bring in someone with defense experience. However, the sure-tackler expressed his happiness for his former coach.
“I received it from Mike Barrett and Ernest Hausmann,” Colson stated on Monday. Just different, though. Simply put, something is off; they seem a little afraid. However, you never know. However, I am glad for him that he has a job. I am happy for him. I will probably tell him what is up after the game because I am happy. Thus, all you have to do is go play ball outside.
Now that Helow is with Alabama, does Alabama have an advantage over Michigan in terms of competition? Colson is not convinced. It is reasonable to suppose that Michigan has altered certain aspects, such as its signals, since Helow lived in Ann Arbor. In his opinion, Alabama will need to contain the Wolverines’ defense, even though Helow may be somewhat aware of what is happening.
“In football, you really can not have an advantage,” Colson remarked. “Even if you are aware of someone is entire game plan, you must still stop it. Therefore, in football, you can not really have an advantage. You have to go play ball, let the dice fall where they may, and go out there.
Alabama and Michigan will play on January 1 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
