Oklahoma Sooners football: The team will sign a second consecutive class of top-10 recruits.

Less than a day before the early national signing day window opens on Wednesday, the 2024 Oklahoma football recruiting class has 28 commitments.

All 28 of the current commits have signed letters of intent, and head coach Brent Venables is hoping to get them all. Though he does not discount the chance of trading for a few top prospects prior to the reopening of the National Signing Day window on February 7.

The fact that Venables has moved his signing day press conference from later in the afternoon, as he has done in previous years, to early in the morning is one sign that the 2024 Sooner class is about finalized and not anticipating any big surprises on Wednesday.

Oklahoma currently has the third-largest class size among the universities predicted to place in the top ten nationally. Furthermore anticipated is Venables’s second consecutive top-10 class. After the 2023 recruiting cycle, ESPN, On3, 247Sports, and Rivals all had the Sooners ranked No. 4, No. 7, and No. 8.

On3, 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals rank OU sixth, eighth, and ninth, respectively, ahead of Wednesday’s early signing day for 2024 recruits.

One five-star recruit (DL David Stone) and thirteen four- and thirteen three-star recruits make up Oklahoma’s 2024 class, according to the 247Sports Composite, which is a compilation of player ratings from the major recruiting services. There are 13 players on the defensive end and 15 on the offensive end of the position breakdown.

Pro talent on the offensive and defensive lines, as well as in the defensive secondary, was clearly something the Sooners were interested in pursuing. There are five offensive linemen, seven defensive backs, and the same number of defensive linemen (including two edge rushers) in the 2024 class.

In order to prepare for the Sooners’ transition to the SEC starting next season, Venables and his staff have adopted a different strategy than Oklahoma did during the Lincoln Riley years, which focused on attracting highly regarded recruits at the offensive skill positions.

To be honest, I can not remember the last time offensive and defensive linemen were OU’s top recruits in either category. In particular, we are talking about OL Eddy Pierre-Louis, who committed to the Sooners last Friday, and five-star defensive lineman David Stone.
