Carl Webb, the former Queensland Origin star, has passed away following a prolonged battle with motor neurone disease.

Rugby league is in sorrow following the passing of former Queensland and Broncos star Carl Webb at the age of 42. Webb, who battled motor neurone disease for four years, succumbed to the illness on Thursday night, reportedly after a fall at his home in Dalby.

Known as one of the most formidable forwards of his era, Webb retired from the NRL in 2011 after an illustrious career spanning over a decade. His diagnosis of MND in 2020 brought about challenges, and earlier this year, he shared his struggles, expressing the difficulty of performing everyday tasks.

Despite his health battle, Webb initiated the Carl Webb Foundation to raise awareness and funds for those affected by MND.

A beloved figure in North Queensland’s history, Webb held the club record for bench press, lifting an impressive 187kg during his career. Cowboys CEO Jeff Reibel paid tribute to Webb, highlighting his transformative role at the club and describing him as a “footballer’s footballer” known for his intensity on and off the field.

Webb’s exceptional strength feats at the Broncos, including benching 180kg and squatting 252.5kg, still stand as records. Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy honored Webb’s resilience and announced plans to commemorate his legacy.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles acknowledged the impact of MND and praised Webb’s character. ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys commended Webb’s toughness on and off the field, expressing condolences to his family and friends.

Webb, a tough enforcer, began his career with the Broncos in 2000, then played for the Cowboys, finishing his career with Parramatta in 2011. He represented Queensland and Australia and participated in the Indigenous All Stars matches.

Survived by his partner Cassandra and four children, Webb leaves behind a lasting legacy, remembered for his strength, toughness, and contributions to the rugby league community.
